Go Home -Tell Your People

As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged to go with him. Jesus did not let him, but said, “Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.”So, the man went away and began to tell in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him. All the people were amazed. Mark 5 18-20 NIV

What a story! Jesus drives out a legion of demons from a man and sends them into a herd of pigs. The story does not stop there; the pigs run off a cliff into the sea and drown. Wow! People spread the news; they wanted Jesus gone! Scary stuff was going down!

How about the man relieved of the demons? Did he recollect any of the demon possessions? He was sitting there, in awe, I amsure. Jesus cares for him, dresses him, and he is in his right mind. The man begs to go with Jesus. I too would want to be near Jesus, who rescued me, who has healed me, and who will continue to protect me.

We all would like to be the chosen twelve disciples who  were privy to many miracles, teachings, also intimate conversations. But we are not all gifted to be those intimate discipleship. Jesus does not exclude but instead He gives us a special mission, calling, or discipleship. He tells us, “Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.”  This is all that is requested, we go home to our people and tell  what Jesus has done for us. How Jesus has made us a part of His family through Baptism. How we receive absolution and forgiveness through His Word. How we are forgiven and strengthened in the faith with all believers through Holy Communion.

Isn’t this a wonderful story to share? Not a story to be frightened of but a story to be amazed at, and a story to tell!
