Mosquitoes! Why?
The Edmonton area has had record amounts of rain this summer and although it means that gardens and trees are well watered, it also comes with the negative effect of an over abundance of mosquitoes. You can’t spend any time outside without being swarmed by those little vampires and there’s nothing worse than being woken up in the wee hours of the morning to the persistent mosquito buzzing by your ear and not being able to swat him so you can go back to sleep. You wake up in the morning discovering another itchy bite and spots of blood on the bedding and you wonder, why did God create the mosquito? What purpose could it have?
Well, mosquitoes are pollinators. Their primary food source is flower nectar not blood. So as they move from flower to flower they transfer pollen. And it’s only once females lay eggs do they seek blood for protein. Males never bite.
Mosquitoes are also food for dragonflies, bats, frogs, lizards, and birds. So if there weren’t any mosquitoes many of those insects, birds, reptiles, etc wouldn’t be able so survive.
Although the mosquitoes are driving me crazy this summer, I have accepted that they do have a valuable purpose and God really does know best with all He has created, whether we understand it all or not. So I continue to use my mosquito repellent when I go out and setup the indoor zapper to help mitigate the sleep disturbances and I thank God for His creation.
