Yogi and Boo-Boo

Yogi and Boo-Boo
Coming out of the library one Saturday morning, walking down the wheelchair ramp two things
caught my attention; a homeless couple standing at the end of the ramp and directly across the
street from them, a funeral procession. What to do? I find it awkward to acknowledge
homeless people. Should I change direction and retreat another way? No. I will walk down and
say hello. As the three of us respectfully watched the mourners exit the church behind the
casket we talked about death and life. The homeless woman said to me, “I’m Boo-Boo and this
is Yogi. We stick together like Yogi and Boo-Boo.” The cartoon characters flashed before my
eyes. Yes, even though Yogi Bear always tries to steal the picnic basket, we see the two of them
as appealing and engaging comrades.
As the hearse drove away and the people dispersed, I said goodbye and returned to my car.
“Yogi and Boo-Boo, we stick together.” Do you stick together with Jesus? He is the comrade
that stays with us thru everything. Jesus tells us he is our friend and our brother. A friend who
sticks closer than a brother. So whether you are down on your luck, just going to the library like
me, or a mourner at a funeral, our Saviour stands by our side ready to acknowledge our need
and be the Rock to lean on as we navigate life. He doesn’t try to steal our picnic basket but our
Saviour does want to steal our hearts for eternity.
