MEDITATING ON CHRIST’S SACRIFICE

MEDITATING ON CHRIST’S SACRIFICE

Psalm 22:6 But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by mankind and despised by the people.

These prophetic words speak of Jesus. Not only did Jesus humble himself to become a man but He also called Himself a worm.

The Hebrew word for worm used in Psalm 22 is “tola.” It refers to a tiny worm the size of a pea that, when crushed, its blood produces a red dye.

Jesus was crushed and His red blood was shed for our sins on the cross. Philippians 2:8 says, And being found in human form, Jesus humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.”

As we meditate this Holy Week on Christ’s sacrifice, we can sing the words of LSB 437.

Alas and did my Saviour bleed and did my sovreign die

Would He devote that sacred head for such a worm as I?

Yes. He did die and He does care. And His glorious resurrection assures us of eternal life with Him.
