A Favourite Recipe or a Family Tradition
I came across this Crazy Craft Lady’s post in the today and it almost left tears running down my face. The Christmas boxes packed are put away, order restored to my home and the left over desserts are waiting to be finished. Over the celebrations and at the meetings treats were brought. I can hear the voices ringing in my ears: “That was my grandmother’s recipe “ or that casserole has been passed down for over four generations. Comfort foods, a memory shared of a special person, a special time, family gatherings, times where the food brought out the love that blanketed us and made us feel special and safe.
How many church cookbooks have you bought over the years or cherished from your mother’s collection after she passed? How many recipies have you submitted to those cookbooks?
You read those cookbooks from time to time, not only does the food being presented bring a smile to you, but the name of the one who sent it in, Carol, Betty, Marian and the list goes on. Their face brings a memory, a note in the margin to say “good” or “bad” “add salt” or “make when company comes!”
“Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.” – Hebrews 13:2
As we leave this season of giving into the commercialized season of love, remember our modern technology can’t replace that coffee stained recipe card, that book with the handwriting of generations of women in our families or that story that went with how we made turtles from year to year and how it came into our traditions in the first place… remember when!
